Yi Peng — Lantern Festival
Date: November (full moon)
Thousands of paper lanterns (khom loi) lit with an inner flame rise simultaneously over the Old City moat during November's full moon. The image — a sky full of points of light floating silently upward — is the most reproduced photograph in Thailand. It coincides with Loi Krathong, when people release small illuminated floral rafts on the river. The festival also has concerts, parades and an atmosphere unique in Southeast Asia. Accommodation: book months in advance.
