Five bonfires in the shape of kanji characters and symbols lit simultaneously on the hills surrounding the city to guide ancestral spirits back to the afterlife at the end of Obon. The most famous is the Great Daimonji on Mount Nyoigadake, visible from almost anywhere in northern Kyoto. The spectacle lasts about thirty minutes and viewing points fill up two hours before.
